Okay, I’m stumped. I don’t know what to call this process. It isn’t writing and it’s not typing. Thinking is too highfalutin. Downloading is technically appropriate, but misleading. Transcribing comes closest if you follow the New Oxford American Dictionary and I do:
transcribe — verb [ trans. ] — put (thoughts, speech, or data) into written or printed form.
Still, that’s not exactly right, either. Words are very subtle gizmos, they have shades and nuances. They aren’t suited to one-size-fits-all usage. The trick is finding the perfect one. In this case, the word I want probably doesn’t even exist. Not in any dictionary or thesaurus I have access to, anyway. I need a minumum of two words or a maximum of a paragraph to describe this thing I’m doing.
In a nutshell? Pandering and transcribing is the activity I’m engaged in. I only came to the realization this morning and I can’t say I’m happy about it. So, as of now, there will be no more pandering. No more transcribing. I hereby resign my position as Panscriber — effective immediately.
Maybe you didn’t notice the slide into smarmy blather; I sure didn’t and I’m the offending party. But as I searched through old posts I realized I’m trying harder to be glib and likable than interesting and compelling. I promise you, that’s going to stop and I’m turning this ship around. Right now.
Don’t you worry. A sudden shift from panscriber to wordy smart-ass is already under way. And I apologize for the weird detour. I’ll start paying attention from now on; I hate sudden surprises like that.
