In a world with Emily Dickinson poetry and Peter Paul Rubens paintings and James Thurber stories; where there’s music and puppies and tulips and beer; in a place that produced Gandhi, Jonas Salk, Einstein, and Atticus Finch; how have we come to this?
Well, Christopher Hitchens, public intellectual and troublemaker, had a very fine answer. Long before the question was asked, he stated:
‘My own view is that this planet is used as a penal colony, lunatic asylum, and dumping ground by a superior civilization to get rid of the undesirable and unfit. I can’t prove it, but you can’t disprove it, either.’
Now, I’m too lazy to look into when or under what circumstances the comment was made, but his logic is unassailable. We don’t need documentation, a quick review of the world-at-large is perfectly sufficient evidence. Trump, after all, is in the White House (when he isn’t golfing at a gaudy Trump property).
‘Nuff said, right?
